Westmoor High School is a public 9-12 high school located in Daly City, California, just south of San Francisco. We have about 1,850 students. Filipino students make up our largest ethnic group, about 44%.
I have been in the science department at Westmoor for two years. During this time, I have taught Earth Science, Human Anatomy and Physiology and English language learners. I also teach mycology in a community outdoor education program every winter. Prior to becoming a teacher, I was a computer networking engineer for Visa. I have worked with mainframe and personal computers for over twenty years.
When I started at Westmoor, I brought my own laptop, and the school gave me a digital projector. The two form an integral part of my teaching style. I use power point style presentations, saved web pages of current events, and stored digital video, mostly in the quicktime format, as a regular part of my classroom presentations. My students regularly receive internet research assignments as homework. Almost all our students have access to a computer outside of school. All of my worksheets, quizzes and handouts are digitally generated and edited. Attendance is entered and maintained on school computers.
Our school's internet connectivity is such that I cannot rely on streaming video working properly. Most of our classrooms do not have computers for student use. Our school library has computers, and we have a computer lab.
